What People Have Shared With Us

CH

Carol Hughes

British expatriate, Chiang Mai

"I had been putting off looking at my finances for years β€” genuinely afraid of what I might find. The First Joint gave me a way in that didn't feel frightening at all. Margaret is exceptionally good at explaining things without making you feel foolish for not knowing them already."

DP

David Prentice

Retired, Chiang Mai (Australian)

"I signed up for Building the Frame after doing The First Joint the year before. The way the two courses connect is really well thought out β€” there was no repetition, just a natural deepening of things I had only half understood before. I particularly valued the session on Thai fixed deposits and what they actually mean in practice."

SK

Siriporn Kaewsong

Small business owner, Chiang Mai

"I knew a fair amount about running my business accounts but very little about personal savings and planning for later life. The Finished Piece gave me a much clearer picture of what questions I should be asking β€” and where to go for proper advice when I am ready to act. It is important to me that they don't try to sell you anything."

RN

Robert Nichols

Semi-retired, Chiang Mai (Canadian)

"I had tried online courses before and always lost interest halfway through. The difference here is that there are other people in the room. You hear someone else ask a question and realise you had the same one but hadn't quite formulated it. The group dynamic is genuinely part of the learning."

JL

Janet Lim

Nurse, Chiang Mai (Singaporean)

"I completed all three programmes over two years. Each one built on the last in a way that felt natural rather than hurried. By the time I reached The Finished Piece I actually had a proper planning folder with things I had thought through myself β€” not a generic template, but my own thinking, guided by the sessions."

PT

Prasert Tongdee

Teacher, Chiang Mai

"I was a bit sceptical at first β€” I wondered whether an English-language course would really cover Thai banking properly. It does. Peter clearly knows the Thai banking system from the inside, and the session on comparing savings accounts was one of the most practically useful things I have done in years."

Three Student Journeys in Detail

EF

Eleanor & Frank Mitchell

British couple, approaching retirement Β· Chiang Mai

Starting Point

The Mitchells had lived in Thailand for eleven years and knew very little about how their Thai bank accounts actually worked. They were uncertain about their pension income from the UK and worried about healthcare costs as they got older. Frank described feeling "embarrassed to have left it so long."

What Helped

They completed The First Joint together, then Building the Frame. The session on healthcare planning in The Finished Piece β€” which Eleanor attended alone while Frank was travelling β€” gave her the framework she needed to start a proper conversation with a licensed advisor about what they should put in place before turning 65.

What Changed

After three programmes over 18 months, they felt clear enough about their situation to act. They opened a fixed deposit account, set up a savings routine for Frank's consultancy income, and finally arranged a meeting with a licensed financial advisor with a list of considered questions β€” something they had never managed before.

NA

Nattapong Atthasit

Sales manager, 47 Β· Chiang Mai

Starting Point

Nattapong earned a reasonable income but had never developed consistent saving habits. Money came in and went out without any clear structure. At 47, he wanted to start thinking about the next twenty years but did not know where to begin.

What Helped

He started with Building the Frame (having done basic budgeting elsewhere). The worksheet on saving routines β€” specifically the one about automating transfers β€” was something he said "changed my relationship with my monthly salary entirely." He found the midway discussion particularly valuable for troubleshooting his specific situation.

What Changed

Within three months of completing the course, Nattapong had set up a standing transfer to a fixed deposit account and reduced his unplanned spending noticeably. He described not feeling anxious about money in the way he had before β€” "not because I have more, but because I understand where it goes."

MW

Marion Watters

Recently retired, 62 Β· New Zealand, now Chiang Mai

Starting Point

Marion moved to Chiang Mai after retirement and found herself in an unfamiliar financial landscape. Her New Zealand pension came in monthly but she had no sense of how Thai banking worked, what savings options were available, or how to plan for healthcare costs.

What Helped

She found The First Joint "exactly the right pace for settling in." The Finished Piece, which she did the following year, walked her through Thai healthcare planning and the basics of insurance products in a way that was "more useful than anything I found online." She appreciated that the educator always made clear when a topic required a licensed professional's guidance.

What Changed

Marion now has a clear picture of her monthly income, a savings account she monitors weekly, and a healthcare plan she understands. "I feel like I arrived here at 60 with a foggy window and Lanna Ledger helped me clean it. I can see what is in front of me now."
